Normandale Hills, Poplar Bridge, Artistry selected for arts grant

Bloomington’s Normandale Hills and Poplar Bridge elementary schools and Artistry are among 70 grantees selected to receive a Minnesota State Arts Board 2019 Arts Learning grant.

The grant is funding a “Celebrate Us” mural residency, by engaging 125 third grade students at Normandale Hills and Poplar Bridge. Artist Brian Jensen works with grade-level teachers and art specialists to prepare students for and facilitate the mural-making process.

Students discuss the collaborative process, work with Jensen to design, lay out and paint the murals. Throughout the project, students also learn the history and pioneers of mural-making while deepening their understanding of equity and inclusion through the arts.

Jensen is on-site over the course of six weeks at each school. Normandale Hills’s mural is nearly completed, with Poplar Bridge just beginning its project. The murals will be prominently displayed in each school upon completion.

The project is one of many collaborative efforts between Bloomington Public Schools and Artistry to bring unique and creative educational experiences to Bloomington students and families.
